‘And if we, in our wonderment, ask which of the city‘s stones is the most important, and about which stone we can tell the most significant story, then we must conclude that no individual stone is the most important; indeed, we must acknowledge that all of the stones together form the city. The power of the individual stone lies in the fact that if it is removed it proves to be indispensable. If we remove it, the building collapses. That is the moment when the specific properties of the stone are revealed.’
