‘We are governed by our desire to safeguard the city, and by our fear of the threat from outside. If we still assign value to the power of symbols, then we shall draw a furrow in the earth, in the same way that in the past the area where the city was to be built was designated. We shall interrupt the furrow there where the city gates are to be built. And crossing the furrow means a violation of the city boundary. If we are alienated from the symbols, and if these have lost their value for us, we shall settle somewhere – of course. However, we shall notice that we have to search for other means of securing our safety.’
