A space is a context. The context in which visitors to that space become receptive to what they see there, because of the way in which they see it.
(Perhaps they want to – metaphorically – crawl inside what they see; or they unconsciously form mental connections between objects in that space, which ostensibly do not have much in common.)
A space interpreted as an implement. My spaces have always been manipulated. I am an exhibition designer.
