CALVARIUM
Frank Halmans
Artist

My contribution to Vedute is an architectural fragment. Or rather, an architectural detail. It is the flat roof of a house, executed to scale. Although it is deliberately nondescript architecturally, it is immediately recognizable as the top storey of an ordinary urban dwelling. The exterior walls that support the roof are incomplete.
I have omitted the interior walls. In particular because of the scale used, the work has the physical characteristics of a lid or perhaps a head covering.
The association it brings to my mind is even more physical. For me, it is strongly reminiscent of fossilized skull caps, so-called calvaria.
