I experience the city as an implement. For me, Amsterdam is a confusing city. There are few landmarks or objects by which to get your bearings that are also recognizable to an outsider. Traffic signs, street furniture etc. result in a visual ‘fragmentation bomb’. Visual information should facilitate the purposive use of the city. Art in the city should be a relevant addition. In the case of a public commission, artists have a responsibility towards their fellow citizens. And above all, one should bear in mind that, by and large, nothing is better than something.
