On the outside, the manuscript displays a simple contrast: horizontal-vertical. On the inside, many variations of light are visible: sharp/diffuse, contrastive/even, flaring/evenly distributed, etc. The space becomes visible due to the light.
The light is visible due to the space, where it touches the boundary. The light is perceived in relation to non-light.
